Dr Mark Donaldson was one of 5 Australian ophthalmologists selected to attend the Beyond Retina meeting in Athens, in March 2017.

Delegates discussed the role of inflammation in diabetic retinopathy and new treatments becoming available now and in the near future. The highlight was an inspiring talk by Dr Bertrand Piccard, a medical doctor and founder of Solar Impulse, the first airplane to fly around the world using solar power only. He spoke on the topic of innovation and how technology can improve outcomes for society and for our patients. Innovations such as drone delivery of pocket sized OCT technology to visit elderly patients in their home have the potential to revolutionise ophthalmic care in the future. Important case studies were shared and discussed with retinal surgeons from around the world.
