Dr Sing-Pey Chow was invited to speak at the Queensland chapter meeting of the Cornea and Contact Lens Society of Australia (CCLSA) on Tuesday 9th May.
The event was held at the Greek Club, and was attended by optometrists with a special interest in the cornea and contact lenses.
Dr Chow spoke about the history of corneal transplantation and its evolution from full-thickness transplants (called ‘penetrating keratoplasty’) to partial-thickness transplants that selectively treats the diseased layer of the cornea. These procedures enable quicker visual recovery, decreases the risk of transplant rejection in some cases, and maintains the structural integrity of the eye. However, there will always be a role for penetrating keratoplasty, and systemic immunosuppressive medications are sometimes concurrently used in cases at high risk of transplant rejection.
Other presentations on the night included an entertaining debate on the use on multifocal contact lenses, as well as an update on contact lens care and comfort.
