In addition to being a comprehensive general ophthalmologist, Dr Lai is a consultant Neuro-Ophthalmologist and Glaucoma Subspecialist. His areas of expertise include: comprehensive adult ophthalmology (including age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease injections and laser), complex cataract surgery, pterygium surgery, neuro-ophthalmology and glaucoma surgery (including both traditional and modern minimally-invasive techniques). He is an Associate Lecturer with the University of Queensland and is actively involved in the training of both medical students and ophthalmology registrars. He is also a consultant at the Mater Adults Hospital, where he is available to see patients through the public system.

A Brisbane boy, Dr Lai graduated as Dux of Anglican Church Grammar School (Churchie). He subsequently completed undergraduate medical training at the University of Melbourne where he was awarded a Dean’s Honour List position. Part of his degree included a year of cell biology research at the Queensland Eye Institute, where he investigated the growth of human corneal endothelial cells on silk fibroin membranes for corneal transplantation. After graduating, he completed medical and surgical residencies at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, the Mater Hospital, and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. He was subsequently accepted into the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and completed the final board examinations in 2020. He has subsequently completed further subspecialty and fellowship training in Glaucoma and Neuro-Ophthalmology at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Royal Perth Hospital in Western Australia, and at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in London (the oldest and largest Eye Hospital in Europe).

Outside of Ophthalmology, Jonathan enjoys music, tennis, SCI-FI and dining out.
