Queensland Ocular Oncology Service

The Queensland Ocular Oncology Service, located at the Terrace Eye Centre is provided by Dr William Glasson, Dr Sunil Warrier, Dr Lindsay McGrath and Dr Timothy Beckman. This service has been responsible for the treatment of patients with intraocular and ocular surface malignancies for the past 30 years. The QOOS receives patients from all over Queensland, Northern New South Wales and the Northern Territory.

Instrumental in the establishment of the Ocular Oncology service in Queensland, Dr William Glasson undertook postgraduate training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.  During his time there he completed further training in the areas of ocular oncology and lid and lacrimal pathology .  He is a consultant Ophthalmologist at the Mater Public Hospital in Brisbane and provides outreach services to the Indigenous populations of Queensland.

Following completion of his ophthalmology specialist training in Queensland, Dr Sunil Warrier was awarded the Prevent Blindness Foundation Scholarship and pursued further training in the subspecialty fields of Ocular Oncology, Glaucoma and Medical Retina.  This included a fellowship at the prestigious Liverpool Ocular Oncology Centre (NHS Centre for Excellence), located within the St Paul’s Eye Unit in the United Kingdom.  Dr Warrier is the head of department at the Mater Hospital Brisbane, and consults at both Redlands Eye Specialists and the Queensland Ocular Oncology Service located at the Terrace Eye Centre.

Dr McGrath undertook her specialty ophthalmology training in Queensland. She completed her training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital, with an acting fellow role in the orbital, lacrimal and plastics team. She then went on to complete a further year of subspecialty training in ocular oncology, oculoplastics and orbit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, UK. Dr McGrath is a visiting Consultant Ophthalmologist and Supervisor of Training at the Mater Adults Hospital and consults at the Qld Oncology Service.

Following admission as Fellow of Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (FRANZCO), Dr Beckman completed further Australian and International fellowship training. As Fellow of the Scottish Ocular Oncology Service, the Tennent Institute of Ophthalmology in the United Kingdom provided focussed experience of both Ocular Oncology and Orbital surgery. Dr Beckman has expertise in the management of ocular surface, intraocular, ocular adnexa and orbital tumours.

Professor Tim Sullivan and Dr Sonia Yuen also offer ongoing care in the field of ocular adnexal oncology (eyelid, lacrimal and orbital tumours) through the Terrace Eye Centre.

Professor Sullivan received specialist training at London’s prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in the areas of orbital, lacrimal and oculoplastic surgery. He is a world leader in the area of orbital tumours, and is involved in regular speaking engagements on the international circuit. He provides a state-wide service for patients with orbital pathologies including vascular tumours such as cavernous haemangioma, optic nerve tumours such as glioma and meningioma, lacrimal gland tumours and orbital lymphoma. Professor Sullivan also provides an extensive oculoplastic service through the Terrace Eye Centre, which includes surgery to the lacrimal system.

Dr Yuen provides comprehensive care in the field of paediatric ophthalmology. Her area of expertise includes (but is not limited to) conditions such as squints, congenital cataracts, and lacrimal defects in children. Dr Yuen is also trained in the area of oculoplastics and collaborates closely with Professor Sullivan to provide an extremely thorough and extensive service in dealing with tumours of the eyelid and ocular adnexae.

Transvitreal lesion biopsy, vitreous biopsy for intraocular lymphoma, and endo-resection of choroidal melanoma are also available through our distinguished retinal surgeons Dr Mark Donaldson, Dr Albert Aralar and Dr Michael Hogden
