Professor Tim Sullivan and Dr Matthew Cranstoun won the prestigious Dermot Roden Prize at the 2018 annual RANZCO scientific meeting.

The Dermot Roden Prize is awarded for the best Oculoplastics paper presented at the meeting.

The team, led by Professor Sullivan and authored by his current fellow Dr Cranstoun examined the benefit of ultra-low dose radiotherapy to treat lymphoma of the extraocular tissues. This decreased dose was shown to not only be effective in the treatment of this disease, but also minimised the ocular and extraocular side effects, and allowed for the possibility of further treatment in the event of a recurrence. The lower dose will also minimise the treatment burden for patients and may become the standard of care for lymphoma localised to the orbit.

Professor Sullivan and Dr Cranstoun with the addition of Dr Sing-Pey Chow, were also the recipients of the “Best Surgical Video” and “Best Overall Video” award at the meeting for their video on “Surgical Emphysema.” The video was authored by Dr Alex Newman, Ophthalmology Registrar at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, and provided an excellent film representation of this rare but potentially sight threatening condition.
