The 2023 European Retina Specialists meeting was held in Amsterdam from October 4-8.

This year there were multiple start ups offering Artificial Intelligence solutions for OCT interpretation and it is becoming clear that the exponential growth of this technology will soon surpass the human ability of even the best retina specialists. Whether this will happen in two years or ten is not clear, but it will happen. This is good news for our patients as it will certainly increase diagnostic accuracy and improve treatment outcomes.

Whilst OCT interpretation is becoming much more science than art, retinal surgery certainly remains a mixture of art and science and robots will not replace retinal surgeons in our lifetime. Euretina brings together many of the most gifted retinal surgeons in Europe and watching the surgical videos of some of these incredibly gifted surgeons is truly inspiring. For me this is always the highlight of the meeting, watching these surgical videos and the often passionate discussions afterward is incredibly educational and inspiring. Techniques to replace dislocated or subluxed intraocular lenses have improved dramatically over the past five years, especially with new Goretex sutures which will never break. New Toric lenses suitable for sutured scleral fixation are coming to Australia this year and this will be a big advance, refining the outcomes even further.
