On 23 August 2025, Dr Peter Beckingsale presented at the Queensland Branch RANZCO meeting as part of a Controversies Symposium on “Surgical Vision Correction in Keratoconus.”
The session explored differing perspectives on how best to manage keratoconus, a complex condition that continues to challenge ophthalmologists and patients alike. Dr Beckingsale defended the role of established, evidence-based treatments—including corneal cross-linking, contact lenses, and corneal transplantation—emphasising their proven safety, durability, and long-term outcomes.
While newer surgical approaches and technologies are generating interest, Dr Beckingsale highlighted the importance of balancing innovation with caution. He noted that established treatments remain the cornerstone of effective care for keratoconus, ensuring patients receive reliable, predictable results.
The symposium generated thoughtful discussion and underscored the value of open debate in refining approaches to complex eye diseases. Dr Beckingsale’s contribution reinforced the enduring relevance of tried-and-tested therapies in safeguarding vision for patients with keratoconus.
