Our very own Dr Bill Glasson AO has been awarded the “Order of Timor-Leste” in recognition of his outstanding contribution to ophthalmology services for the people of Timor-Leste, including his work prior to the nation gaining independence in 2002.
The Order of Timor-Leste is the highest honour currently awarded by the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and recognises significant contributions made by both Timorese citizens and international individuals who have supported and advanced the wellbeing of the Timorese people.
Dr Glasson, along with all of us involved in the program, believes the remarkable success of the East Timor Eye Program is a testament to the vision and dedication of its Director, Dr Nitin Verma, as well as the many ophthalmologists, nurses, optometrists, and healthcare professionals who have been trained through the program.
We are incredibly proud that the East Timor Eye Program has reached such an important milestone, with Timor-Leste’s own eye care professionals now equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to continue providing high-quality eye care to their communities with minimal external support.
This achievement reflects the lasting impact of collaboration, education, and sustainable healthcare development.
