The Queensland Ocular Oncology Service (QOOS) recently attended the ISOO conference in Goa, India in December 2024. The International Society of Ocular Oncology (ISOO) meeting is a biennial meeting which attracts experts in ocular surface, intraocular, ocular adnexa and orbital tumours from across the world. Ophthalmologists Dr William Glasson, Dr Lindsay McGrath and Dr Timothy Beckman joined a large Australian / New Zealand delegation with several presentations which were well received.
Dr Glasson chaired an impressive session ‘Pole to pole: Tips and tricks in Ocular Oncology’ which detailed surgical techniques. This session included experts from across the world outlining best practice management of ocular pathology and generated interesting discussion ensuring best possible outcomes for our patients.
Dr McGrath provided insight into uveal melanoma biopsy technique and shared details of the processes implemented by QOOS which optimise success of obtaining representative tissue. Showcasing our precision with these processes and collaboration with Queensland ocular pathologists was very well received and generated considerable international recognition from ISOO delegates. Ocular Pathologist Dr David Ryan (Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology) provided an important insight into the refinement of these techniques to ensure accuracy of specimen collection. Matthew D’Mellow was also in attendance representing both QIMR (Queensland Institute of Ophthalmology) and Terrace Eye Centre. The Queensland Ocular Oncology Service continue to have a strong research focus with current access to Australian and International treatment studies.
Dr Beckman presented outcomes from uveal melanoma treatment modalities, outlining the importance of patient follow up. As an expert panelists in the orbital tumours session he generated informative discussion and also presented a comprehensive summary of the management of orbital tumours.
The Queensland Ocular Oncology Service continue to provide contributions to the literature and place importance on attendance of international ocular oncology conferences. The ISOO meeting in India certainly provided an important opportunity for continued collaboration with our Australian and international colleagues. These relationships and advances ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients at Terrace Eye Centre.
