The Queensland branch of RANZCO (Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists) held their annual conference
on the Gold Coast 31/8/24 until 1/9/24 with a focus on cataract and glaucoma surgery. We were privileged to have two world renowned experts join us – Dr Uday Devgan from the Unite States and Dr Lingam Vijaya from India. Dr Vijaya is an expert in complex and paediatric glaucoma. She presented updates on these subjects drawing from her vast experience in India where there are very large numbers of patients with diffiult to manage glaucoma. Terrace Eye Centre’s glaucoma specialist Dr Jonathan Lai presented a case of a difficult surgical revision of a failing glaucoma trabeculectomy.
Dr Devgan is one of the nest known cataract surgeons in the world and runs the very popular caractcoach.com YouTube channel and website which hosts thousands of cataract surgery training videos ranging from those aimed at beginning surgeons to the most complex cases. Dr Peter Beckingsale from Terrace Eye Centre joined a panel of cataract experts to challenge Dr Devgan in his keynote session: “Challenging Cataract Cases – Tough Cases”
Other interesting topics covered at the meeting included the rise of AI for medical record keeping, trends in cataract surgery and intraocular lens usage and the changing paradigm in glaucoma management with new laser and surgical techniques reducing the need for medical therapy in many cases.
Next year’s meeting will return to the Gold Coast again with the focus being cornea and oculoplastics.
